Andas

“Andas” is a 25ft long and 13ft wide Box Turtle with a sensory deprivation room under the shell measuring 8ft*8ft.

'Try to be like the turtle - at ease in your own shell.' - Bill Copeland

What’s going on here?

““Andas”, meaning “breathe” in Swedish, is an entrancing luminescent Turtle with a sensory deprivation room representing its heart, located beneath its shell. Andas brings a sense of otherworldliness and serenity to the desert, while casting light on our carbon footprint via its solar powered fulcrum”

Okay, that explained nothing..

“Oh the shells we all carry, letting them evolve, getting heavier and heavier in our unconscious mind. Let’s crawl into our shells to momentarily unload the weight of our minds, stripping the weight off our shoulders until weightlessness glows like a million, beautiful stars” –

I’m giving up ..

“Andas’s vibrant green glow guides you under its penumbra at night; during the day, the turtle’s majestic shell will provide respite from the sun and wind of the desert. Andas will create a pair of experiences. Step onto one of the turtle legs and climb up the shell for an ample view of the city and beauty surrounding you while lounging atop comfortable soft foam. Slide down the top of the shell towards the front of the turtle and sit on the seat behind its head. The neck functions as a fulcrum, pivoting the turtle head up and down from its natural position when engaged. Explore the arcane carvings on the tail, or move it to the side, and crawl through the space behind the tailpiece You will be transported into the heart of the turtle, where you’ll find a holographic bubble wrapped sensory deprivation room, an otherworldly yet calm space where, if you allow, you may find something you didn’t expect

What do you hope to express with this nonsense?

Turtles move at a pace that is all their own, the sea change living through their long and serene lives. Some believe in the “world turtle”, a turtle that supports the entire world which in and of itself, rests on an even bigger turtle, into infinity. Others use turtles to represent the problem of “Infinite regress” by using the expression “Turtles all the way down”. Infinite regress is governed by the recursive principle, that each entity is dependent on, or produced by, its predecessor in infinity. The turtle is a strong symbol no matter what your journey looks like. By bringing a turtle to the Playa, we hope to cast light on the magic we create year after year in the desert and why the re-creation, the build, tear down and re-build of our beloved Black Rock City is so beautiful and rooted in strong old mythology and infinity. We named the piece “Andas” meaning breathe in Swedish as a symbolic gesture meant to represent the tranquil essence of these beloved gentle creatures
